Giant Bombcast - 07/14/15

Boy you know what's annoying? When they mention a game once and then refer to it as "this game" for the rest of the discussion. I wasn't listening for a few seconds, zone back in on the interesting plot line of a game where you're aware that you're in a game and then for the rest of the discussion I'm left wondering how far back was the named mentioned because I don't really want to jump around in the podcast looking for it.

EDIT: Is it The Magic Circle? It was in the show notes, but looking up the wikipedia entry didn't mention what was being talked about. It would still be nice for them to refer to the title than being non-descriptive with "game".

Yeah, same thing happened to me. I actually enjoy trying to guess at what game they're talking about sometimes.

I haven't listened to the podcast yet. But after God of War 2 the franchise has been very meh... Kratos went from being an interesting character to just completely unlikable in GoW3.

I was stuck at the Calgary airport last Sunday for over 6 hours and it was awful. Let's just say to make a 6 hour stay in an airport that much worse...there was line dancing. Line dancing! God damn I hate the Stampede.

I'm curious, is ANYONE going to buy a mattress from a podcast ad?

I'm going to assume their business model is "they had it for 3 months and they're going to be too lazy to return it". lol

There's like 5 gaming podcasts I listen to that has used that mattress ad and I still find it ridiculous. Whatever pays the bills.

I guess so. I just think it's starting to get ridiculous now, especially when you know that Jeff doesn't believe in any product that he has sold (with perhaps the only exception being Crunchyroll since he's a secret Polar Bear Cafe fan).

People selling ads for things they don't believe in is the norm though. It's kind of strange to expect GB the be the exception here.

Giant Bomb's ads are tame in that respect compared to other podcasts I've listened to. Like Bill Burr or Mega64 lmao. The host not believing in the product is what makes it fun, though.

Man, back then giantbomb's belief in a product was pure, like zojirushi.

Now they've been corrupted by the man.

I dunno, at least when it was Vinny they had a weird "storyline" and strung the ads together via Small Business Man.

Now they're just Jeff reading the ads in a loud voice and shouting into the mic. They're not long enough for me to be bothered, but I'm just waiting for Jeff to start selling Adam and Eve porn DVDs in a few months since that seems to be the end game for all podcasts. lol

I bought a zojirushi because of the bombcast. Amazing product. I am too old for
Lootcrate too young to get a mattress and I don't need a website.

That said I am craving Taco Bell.

+1 for Dan's God-of-War bewilderment and the ensuing discussion was hilarious.

God of War was a cool product of its time, but they definitely wore out a lot of the initial 'draw' to the series, imo.

I don't really know about the claim that a God of War sequel has more to offer than a Gears sequel, though.

I'm a huge fan of God of War, the first game blew me away. I thought the second game was pretty great as well. The third was decent but I feel like I ruined a lot of it for myself by absorbing every piece of pre-release coverage that came out. I even got a PS3 for it. I didn't play Ascension because it just didn't appeal.

That being said, I think you're right. That first game did things not many games had, the combat and systems were used as inspirations for other games. Hell, the fact that the first game only has like 3 bosses and they're all these exciting battles... I wanted nothing more than like 3 times the boss fights in that game.

I think it would be hard if Sony Santa Monica were to go full bore in to God of War 4 to pull off a game on par with the first two. Three was fine but it wasn't exceptional. I wouldn't be sad to be proven wrong, though.

I think before the year is up I'm gonna replay 1, 2 and 3. I haven't touched GoW since 3 came out.

You don't need to support what you're advertising as long as they keep giving you money to continue to provide content.

Thing is, Bryan Cranston didn't have to shill for lootcrate during the Breaking Bad commercial breaks. lol
I would almost prefer someone else at CBS to make commercials now, the way that 1up did back when 1up Yours had advertisers for a few episodes. Though I'm sure they just want to pump out these ads in a few minutes and not have to think about it.

I actually purposely listen to the ads because the crunchyroll/nature food website ads were always amusing. UNLIMITED. ANIME.

But now that he's just blowing through them it's like, "might be time to start using that members feed"

they really gotta get back on that zojirushi train.

i seriously have a zojirushi thermos and it kicks ass (when you remember how the pressure lid works that is)

I was seriously think about getting a zojirushi until I realise that as much as I like coffee, I've only ever drank 1 cup of coffee a day, and if I don't feel the need for caffeine I don't drink coffee.

This happens to me a lot while I'm driving. Just losing track of the conversation.

Zojirushi sponsoring the Bombcast would be the greatest thing. I still remember those podcasts with Jeff "trying to get a cut" of that sweet sponsorship money. Those were some great moments.

It's amusing because I also think Gears was a product of its time. Gears is just as guilty of the dude bro, gross and juvenile humor as God of War.

This is coming from someone who absolutely fucking loved Gears 3 (especially the horde mode)... but I'm good. I don't need another.

Yeah, I think it can be said for both games. Like you I loved Gears 3, but have no real need for a new Gears game. Same goes for God of War. While Kratos is a fucking dick, I always enjoyed the pure scale and insanity of those games. But I'm good, I don't need another one unless they do something with Norse mythology or something like that.

I'm not sure if they have much ground to make fun of Dan's love of God of war's sorry when they talk about their love of gears 3 story back when it came out.

I like how Dan said exactly one thing during the talk about investing, and that thing ended up being completely wrong. Long means you expect the stock to increase in value, short means you expect the stock to decrease in value. Without getting too technical, just think "short on cash" not "short term".

Also, I think Dan needs to play Metal Gear 2 to follow up MGS4. He said he never played it and it is very much MGS in its characters and story.

Granted I have only listened to the first 45 minutes but Dan and drew need to start contributing more. A huge thing has happened in the gaming community and what's their input??

Man the beast cast is putting this show to shame at the moment.

God of War 3's story wasn't good because they tried to give Kratos a hidden heart of gold with that Pandora stuff. It really doesn't work after 3 games of seeing him do awful things and they should have embraced him as a full villain instead.

Chuck

Still without luck
Dan put it the best way possible when Brad suggested going to previous western times would somehow be going backwards for Red Dead.

"But who's gonna give a shit"

No one. Can't wait for new Red Dead, myself.

He wasn't a complete cockbag in GOW1 though.

It was 2 and extra so in 3 the character became a irredeemable prick.

I'd say that the longtime sarcastic/cynical ethos of Giant Bomb essentially forced them to adopt a rather sarcastic tone when reading a pitch. Who would know if Jeff liked a product or not when his persona would be smirking through a reading regardless?

WTF is wrong with these people?! The God of War series is amazing.

Don´t know... The first one was a 10/10 game, but the formula got boring after this.

Finished the 2nd one and thought it was OK, stopped playing the 3rd one after 2 hrs or so.

Jeff only likes mattresses that rip out your body hair

Watched the QL of God of War 3 and Dan was saying how beautiful it looked during a part where it showed

one of the titans fingernails and it looked fucking terrible, just bad timing I guess

GoW games are (and have been) in the same situation as the Uncharted games, in terms of people talking about them.

Only on PS, get great reviews, focus mostly on great graphics, set pieces and tight gameplay, meh writing and voice acting, and a vocal minority that can't understand why people like them

Leo Laporte was talking about some numbers he received from Casper and apparently they feel the podcast ads have been instrumental in their growth. I bought one and it's pretty fucking great. Probably never would have heard of it were it not for podcasts.

Drew I understand, but I've always said that about Dan. Most of the best Bombcast material has been industry talk, both past and current. As an editor, I figured Dan would have thoughts on anything industry related but when that talk starts, it's just Jeff and Brad riffing. Occasionally Jason steps in, which is why I think he should be a permanent chair.

Compare that to the Beastcast where all 4 have a least small contributions to each topic. That's part of radio/improv/all entertainment.

Perhaps they're great mattresses, but buying a mattress online without trying it just seems crazy to me. Is there really no catch to their 100 day trial? Like "return fees" or whatever? You'd like to think they just believe in their product so much that no one would bother returning it, but I imagine the cost of shipping and paying for returns would be completely untenable.

There is no catch. They send a courier to pick it up. I think they donate them to local shelters or something.

Ah, I guess that's why they have their for every 10 we donate 1 thing. Which I guess means they have a 10 to 1 return ratio probably.

I guess there's nothing wrong with advertising on podcasts, since it's like radio or TV at this point. But I'm waiting for Jeff to start selling Citibank mortgage services in a few years and it's just going to feel even more ridiculous.
