The idea of Hawkguy actually being good has me more excited than anything else.

I really don't know why people would perish the thought and rather have that potential undermined even further. "I don't want a bad thing to be good". ???

I remember reading an Interview with Whedon that said he would be giving Hawkeye a major role because he felt guilty about his role in the first. Liking the impressions anyway. Can't wait for the 23rd!.

Interesting.

hard to top something that fun.

it's great to hear hawkeye stepped up to the plate for this film tho. dude put me to sleep in avengers, but so did black widow and captain america and they were really fun in winter soldier.

if he got an improvement anywhere near on that level then that will be fun to see, renner always has potential if given something decent to work with.

thor's hopeless though lol.

Yeah good to hear about Hawkeye. I'm hoping Whedon kept Cap as awesome as he was in TWS as opposed to the comically lame doofus he was in the first Avengers.

The goal (which seems to have been accomplished) is to not make that true anymore.

If there's any single thing Joss Whedon excels at, it's giving characters personality.

People keep saying this, but his characterisation was awful in the first Avengers. Stern Cap, stern Thor, jokey Tony, robot Black Widow doesn't understand your hu-man concept of 'jokes'. They were all just playing the single-line blurbs from the Marvel handbook, barely resembling their incarnations in their own solo movies, except for when they'd throw out a pithy, "laughs go here" one liner. Whedon was good at juggling a huge cast on his TV shows, but I didn't see it in Avengers.

Same with the way people say he writes such great female characters, and then the two female characters in the movie are just the same no-nonsense, lips-pursed humourless automaton in different outfits. Sure he can do it, but that doesn't mean he does it every time.

Once you walk in that door, you're a GAFfer.

Extra, just in; critics get early screening of hyped sequel to fun and beloved movie, find nothing wrong with it. Some people shits all over it to get attention. More on this story as it develops.

I swear, AVENGERS AGE OF ULTRON is one big advertisement for CIVIL & INFINITY Wars. Whedon steps into @Jon_Favreau Iron Man 2 territory here"

"ugh"-same guy
I actually don't mind when Marvel movies start acting like they're the middle episode of a slice-of-life drama. But I dream of an ideal world where everything is episodic because characterisation tends to work out better in long form.

Wonder if Whedon took some cues from Matt Fraction's run on Hawkeye and actually gave him a personality and stuff to do (him being brainwashed is not an excuse, just a poor use of the character). But with Jeremy Renner, I can't expect much.

Will be watching for Chris and Robert yet again.

While I've no reason to believe that it won't be good fun I don't trust early reactions to big films, especially superhero films, at all.

Everything is either massively overrated or people look at them through the rosiest of rose tinted glasses.

Hawkeye had a personality long before Fraction... I don't know that they're going to dive into that angle of the character unless he gets a more central spotlight. Right now, I think they're going with extremely skilled wise-ass, and will save the "oh his life is actually kinda in the gutter" angle for when he gets a solo movie or shows up on AoS or something.

I'll judge for myself.

I was already fooled with the first Avengers, so I don't think I'll watch this in cinemas.

Like most Marvel movies (and most superhero movies as a whole), probably another entertaining flash-in-the-pan popcorn movie. But not a great film.

I didn't like the first The Avengers that much, and I'm not expecting to be blown away by Age of Ultron but what I'm excited about now is Hawkeye.

Hawkeye and Scarlet Witch will make this movie for me.

Okay I previously swore I was going to stay out of these threads but:

@reed_tucker Did not see Loki in this movie. #AvengersAgeOfUltron

Noooooooooo. I thought Tom Hiddleston was filming a scene with Idris Elba? I'll be bummed if that was cut - I'm still holding out hope for the after credit sequence.

Other than that, good to see that critic reactions are positive! The impression I'm getting is basically what I expected, to be honest (good, but darker/more emotional than the first).

Wait what really? Why is he not in there. :(

I remember reading someone's prediction in a gaf thread ages ago that
Hawkeye would be the only Avenger left standing, Ultron would be mocking him, and then he shoots him with an arrow made of a shard from cap's shattered shield
. I always liked that idea, doesn't sound too implausible given that quote.

Because Thor needs to be his own character without being saddled to Loki. They've been three-for-three thus far. To rely on him a fourth time before Ragnarok would feel lazy.

I desperately need a Hawkeye solo movie or Black Widow & Hawkeye buddy film. Someone pls give aid.

Hawkeye Netflix show based on Fraction's run would be fucking awesome. Maybe tie/introduce Kate in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Give Widow a movie where she goes back to Russia to face off against Red Guardian, Hawkeye knows where she's headed and tails her as back up.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage

AGE OF ULTRON: Liked, didn't love. A lot more bleak than the first. Excellent banter, great action, SO MUCH HAPPENING.

This is what was worrying me from the trailers. The movie looks like it's going to be 2 straight hours of bleak, "they can't beat Ultron" and inner conflict and then 5 minutes of "welp, beat him." I hate those unbalanced movies.

There's clearly going to be some wisecracking throughout, based on the trailers.

I'm actually fine with it. I'm just confused, because the leak said he would be in it.

Imagine if Hawkeye gets a scene like Flash did in JLU. Fuck that'd be amazing. I like the idea that's being thrown around here as well.

All superhero movies ,most of them bad or average, start out with like 100, 90% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Early reviewers, most of them enthusiasts, will gush whether the movie deserves it or not. Certainly The Avengers ended up with positive review average in total (even if the movie was bad and didn't deserve it), but that one like all of them falls in fresh or meta rating as more critics join in.

Bask in it boys, it's going to get even better soon.

But seriously these early Hawkeye impressions are delusional obvs.

If Hawkeye gets that much screen time, I suddenly don't feel so bad that I'll have to wait and see this a few weeks after release.

Amazing sequel as in a substantial improvement over the first bland and boring outing or as in - more of the same blandness ?

Wait no Loki ? Already a substantial improvement.

My prediction of Hawkeye haters looking to eat crow on this film looking better and better...

I think (hope?) this is a safe bet. Whedon said that he was inspired by Winter Soldier, and even Evans has said he's pushed for more consistency in Cap's power -- i.e. if he's chucking guys like rag dolls left and right in Winter Soldier, he can't go back to getting beaten on by random henchmen here too.

Do we know if the screenings yesterday had the credits scene? If Loki isn't in the main movie I can see him being in the mid credits scene (possibly talking with Thanos). Or something Thor related (for Ragnarok).

Played-by-uncharismatic-actor Quicksilver being worse than one-mighty-impressive-setpiece-and-nothing-else Quicksilver is disappointing.

Oh well!
