The Weekend Confirmed 2014 Thread

GarnettLee ‏@GarnettLee 17m

Though there may not be a show, I feel it my duty to tell you all, “weekend confirmed!” :)

I still refreshed the podcast on my phone multiple times today. I knew it was done but I was holding out for more.

I have been listening to Garnett Lee every Friday for years. I didn't start at the beginning of 1up Yours but I went back and listened to them all.

To really put it into perspective, there isn't another person on this planet in media that I have spent more time listening to than Garnett Lee. The only comparison would be announcers of NFL football games.

I use podcasts to help me sleep. I'm an anxious guy and when I go to bed my mind starts racing. But when I put headphones on and listen to a podcast I can just focus on the topic being talked about and I relax.
Garnett Lee and crew have been symbolically tucking me into bed for years. :)

The only custom livery I was ever proud of in Forza was the one that had "And We're Ghost" across the back of car.

You will all be missed! I wish you all the best for whatever lays ahead of you.

Thanks for entertaining me for so many years!

Cheers.

And....... I'm Ghost.

I came here to say I took Weekend Confirmed for granted and now I'm sad :(. I need Garnett in my ears. This will be the second time I have to suffer from withdrawal. Can't wait for the new production.

I actually listen to weekend confirmed a couple nights a week to help me sleep as well. I really hope you keep going Garnett but if not I guess I understand. You have provided so much entertainment to me over the years I feel like I know you even though we've never met. Good luck man!

Just wanted to add my voice in appreciation. I've been listening almost since the start of 1upyours. That was some magical shit back then. I live in Wisconsin, and my wife and I built a house the year before the PS3 came out, and I started listening to 1upyours. The first winter in our new house I couldn't afford to buy a snow blower, so it took me an hour or so to shovel the driveway when it snowed a decent amount. That's when I really started listening to podcasts. 1upyours quickly became my favorite. As I suffered out in the snow and cold, I would laugh my ass off listening to Shane duke it out with whoever, and Garnett try to reign it in. Such good memories.

It's so weird how people you'll never meet, who share passions with you, can have such a big impact on your life.

As time progressed, I got a snow blower and for 2 1/2 days of every single week over these past how many years, I have listened to you guys while I work out, and then on the way to and from my business. Jeff Cannata was such a brilliant choice for Weekend Confirmed. He's such a positive dude. Way more than I could ever be. It's just such a breath of fresh air to hear a guy like that talk. I'm going to miss it, big time.

I've got to find a new podcast. The Bombcast is still with me at least, though that too hasn't been the same since the passing of Ryan Davis. They've done a great job picking up the pieces, but man that dude brought something special to the table. I still enjoy it though. Since things are changing, I'll need a new podcast. Maybe something not video game related. Science? Science fiction! Any suggestions? Idle Thumbs? I got out that podcast when they broke up for awhile. Is that still good?

Having to listen to Garnett say goodbye on two podcasts is definitely enough for one lifetime. It was heartbreaking on 1UP Yours all those years ago and was heartbreaking again today.

btw anyone looking for a podcast that doesn't listen to Idle Thumbs most definitely should. Those guys are great.

I'll share my Weekend Confirmed story.

I had always played video games, but very casually. I started playing Battlefield 2 over a LAN in Iraq with my buddies, and when I came home I continued to play online regularly. I stopped in late 2006 and never really played anything seriously for then next 3 years or so.

I heard about Battlefield: Bad Company 2 from a friend and decided to build a PC to play it in the spring of 2010. So, I started researching components and reading up on the state of PC gaming. I stumbled across a website called Shacknews. They had a PSA article about a service called Steam having a weekend sale. I had no idea what Steam was, and I was blown away.

Around this same time I learned about podcasts. When I realized Shacknews had a podcast, I was thrilled. Every Saturday while mowing the lawn I now had a group of people to keep me company. Garnett, Jeff and Brian opened my eyes to a whole new world of video games. I was amazed at how deep and rich this hobby is. I became interested in the industry as a whole and not just one or two developers or titles. Their knowledge and witty banter soon brought video games to the forefront of my hobbies.
I was buying titles for the Wii, PS3, PC and Brian's passion for Halo was infectious enough I got my first Xbox. I even made a profile on Shacknews so that I could send a PM to him telling him so.

I know many people don't like the title "Gamer", but I do. Weekend Confirmed made me a Gamer. They created the spark that turned a casual thing in my life into a hobby that for better or worse defines a large part of my personality. Video games in one form or another are now an entrenched part of my daily life.

I listen to many gaming related podcasts now, but Weekend Confirmed was the first. Garnett Lee has actually made a profound impact on my life. At the end of final episode when he was trying to hold it together, I didn't. My throat ached, I had tears in my eyes. It felt like a close friend was moving away.

Thank you, Garnett and the Weekend Confirmed crew!

Very sad indeed, I have been listening to Garnett since the GFW days and I can't imagine a week without listening to who is blatantly a very warm, passionate, and genuine guy that wears his heart on his sleeve.

Thank you for the time and effort you put into the shows over the years Garnett, there has been many a grueling night at my workplace over the years and your passion has helped transport me and got me through.

Hope you find success in your newly chosen field but careers aside no matter what you do continue to follow your heart, have fun, and enjoy down time.

I've been listening faithfully since the beginning on 1Up. Over the years listening to the shows on Friday after work really did signify the end of doing what I had to do in order to be able to do what I love to do. I can't remember the last time I didn't have a show to listen to. I know this sounds overly dramatic but on Friday I felt like I went somewhere to meet some friends I've met with weekly for years and they didn't show up. :( I'm glad we have the old shows and I'll most likely give some of them a listen but it's not the same. After taking a well-deserved break I hope something new is put together. Yes, I know there are other quality podcasts out there but for me this isn't about just having something to listen to, it's about listening to the opinions and voices of people I feel like I know and trust. So I will wait and I will pledge my support to whatever comes down the road.

Garnett, I wish you all the best as you begin this next chapter of your career. I'm sure you're going to land on your feet and be successful in whatever you choose. I honestly believe you're too talented to do otherwise.

This week's show seemed kind of empty. It's like they weren't discussing anything at all. Jesus Garnett, it's like you weren't even trying. At least Andrea didn't shill anything. But geez, this weeks show lacked a lot of substance. You guys were ghosts.

So disappointing. I may not even listen next week.

They seem to have caved to the will of the Tailgate haters, too. For shame, it was one of my favorite segments.

Christian's finishing move was amazing. All the finishing moves were awesome. Man...a lot of feels here. This podcast, along with 8-4 and Giant Bomb were the best three gaming podcasts available.

While it's not Weekend Confirmed, tomorrow, Monday, Feb. 10, Jeff Cannata and I will be welcoming Patrick Klepek to DLC. Episode records live at 11am PT and then is available as a podcast/RSS thereafter. I believe the man himself, Mr. Garnett Lee will be on Feb. 17. Check it out if you're interested. 5by5.tv/DLC.

If you're into conspiracy theories maybe I planned all this to quiet haters in the silence of not having a show and create fervor for a new show!

Nothing new to report yet but a few thoughts. I already really miss doing the show. It's like it became wired into my consciousness. Which is weird too because I got to tell you sometimes I would feel like, well, just, you know, man, I have to get this show together this week and shit I've got to get it all right and I'm not feeling it but I can power through this.

I'm thinking I may cobble together some sort of inexpensive setup to do video and maybe capture too. Knock out quick episodes on what's happening right now. And I pretty much want to be able to do video with any future long form podcast too.

I'm getting a used Mac Mini which I think I can use as a starting point for audio and video editing--going to hook it up to my TV actually to be my media PC but it can do both.

So, there you go. Sunday evening update. Last week at work ahead.

Thanks for the update Garnett. Can't wait for whatever you got coming next.

I typically listen to the show during my work commute and I'm pretty bummed that I won't have anything to listen to tomorrow morning. Guess I'll check out DLC.

Nice, will definitely check both out. Thanks for the heads-up Spicer.

I only started listening to Weekend Confirmed a couple months ago, but I am very much missing it. It was nice to have a podcast where the week's news and events were consistently covered and discussed. As much as I love the other gaming podcasts I listen to (Bombcast, Idle Thumbs), they really only discuss "current events" if it happens to come up in the conversation. Idle Thumbs ignores news completely, and even on the Bombcast it seems like when news is discussed most of the participants are hearing said stores for the first time. Which means they haven't really formed an opinion and aren't that prepared to thoughtfully discuss a story.

Yeah, I can recommend DLC for people looking for something to fill the void after Weekend Confirmed. It's not Weekend Confirmed, but probably the closest thing to it right now, especially seeing as Jeff and Christian are hosts after all.
Some of the main differences are more focus on board games and obviously lower sound quality since they're recording over the Internet (but that also means they can bring in a much wider variety of guests). Oh, and people calling in to the show. Still not too sure about that, but at least the technical side of things seem to be getting better with each episode.

I certainly second this. I enjoy a few of the other 5by5 shows, and have been enjoying the increased board game talk. It's fun to be hearing about something I'm a little less familiar with.

The phones have definitely been getting better. I think the main issue going forward with the phones will be figuring out when the best times are to interrupt the conversation with a call. A new caller can be great, but sometimes I find myself saying "I just want to hear this discussion continue a while longer." The callers really break the flow of the current discussion, and because of the long hold times, it seems they are unlikely to be calling about the subject currently being discussed.

Thanks for that feedback, I really appreciate it.

I really love having the live calls as a part of the show, but it is certainly a learning process for me. I never want it to derail anything we are talking about, but rather inject new perspectives. As the show grows, I hope to find a sweet spot for that stuff. Thanks for listening to it.

Oh, and next week Garnett will be on, so that should be a fun one!

Go the way of Jeff Green! Dark Souls Twitch streaming is the new craze!

I'm looking forward to whatever Garnett does next. In my opinion 1up Yours basically invented modern gaming podcast. Podcasts today still follow the layout 1up Your popularized. Its been awhile and the medium could use a shake up

Time for Garnett to re-invent the wheel (after inventing it the first time!). No pressure or anything

I just heard from the Player One Podcast that Weekend Confirmed was cancelled. I did some googling to try to figure out why, but I couldn't really find anything. Could somebody tell me what happened so that I don't have to go through 100 pages of this thread to figure it out?

Garnett isn't working for Shack News anymore. Shack News doesn't want to continue with Weekend Confirmed anymore.
