Galaxy Nexus |OT|

So, after doing some research on how hard it is to actually replace a Galaxy Nexus' screen, this cracked phone isn't worth nearly what I thought it would be.

The phone has no battery, no charger, and a cracked screen. It is, however, a working Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE) in every respect. I'll ship it to a GAFfer for fifty bucks; otherwise, I'm gonna trash it. Let me know!

... $50 or I'll trash it? Seems like you could compromise for a littles less...?

Pic of the damage?

Someone said this on XDA forums, regarding a broken screen:

So after looking around and finding nothing cheaper than $220 for the replacement screen on GoUnlock.com, I registered for an account on Samsung.com, called up Samsung Mobile Support (+1-888-987-4357) and after talking to a support specialist, I was able to set up a repair order to send my phone to the Samsung Repair Center in Plano, TX, and the total cost (shipping + replacement screen) amounted to $163.46. Turnaround time was a little less than 2 weeks.

Friend of mine specialises in import/export of Mobile phone spare parts and basically told me not to break the screen on my GNex. Its ridiculously overpriced partly because the GNex is a niche product and partly because Samsung manufacture it.

Considering the price that Samsung repair centre is offering the are repairing it at a loss!

So i actually managed to break my Gnex screen. Ended up $300 repairs $50 labor ;_;
lol fucking ridiculous costs. Meanwhile people with slight defections are getting phone replacements at apple stores. Samsung needs to step up their support game if they want to be a huge player. So many people own samsung phones that I'm surprised their CS isn't better.

You didn't get insurance? If something happened like that to me I think I only have to pay a $99 deductable.

At the time i thought i would be fine since i take care of stuff so well. No insurance : /

I'm going to call them and see about getting it added.

Couldn't get the cracks to show up without the annoying flash, sorry. And I couldn't move my battery from my current GNex to the old one...because then I'd have no camera. = (

Next question. Stock or rooted?

stock :)

Hit the red zone again just before, made it to 1d 12h 57m 22s.

As a tip for anyone, I NEVER leave my phone on charge overnight. I endevor to take it off charge as soon as it hits 100%. My previous phone (Nexus 1) I never did this and towards the end of its life it would get to around 15% and just shut off. That was only after something like 20 months. That, and a better mobile provider (from Optus to Telstra NextG for any from AusGAF) are the only differences

If it was a GSM one, I would absolutely take it off your hands right now. It isn't as worthless as you think it is though, do NOT junk it!

I mean if a phone is currently 299 for a 2yr contract, that's roughly the amount you pay to Asurion when you file a claim.

So, so wrong. It's $100 deductible for all smartphones (unsure of iPhone since it always seems to be an exception) that's it. And yes, I've used it.

So i get my Gnex back only to find they repaired the screen and now the LCD is discolored. Very very mad. Have to go back to this place now.

What kind of discoloration is it? Everyone I know with a Gnex (4 other people) have a more washed out screen than mine. I don't know how I lucked out but I'm wondering if they are still using 2 different panels for the phone.

Or are the colors just completely off and not only a different shade?

It wasn't there when my screen was cracked.

Is the Nexus still a good buy? I posted this in the Android OT:

I have kind of a specific question... not sure if this is the best place to ask but figure it can't hurt.

I bought a Droid Bionic at launch and suffered through months of connectivity issues that weren't resolved until two updates in. Now my connection is usually great, but the phone has taken to restarting several times a day. There is a specific spot on the bottom right corner that, if I touch it, will cause the phone to enter into a shut down/restart cycle until I remove the battery or wait out its tantrum. I can no longer put a case on it, because the pressure hits that corner and knocks it out.

Even without hitting that particular trigger, it will restart three or four times a day simply idling in my pocket (it's happened so often that I can sense when I'm about to hear that boot noise). It's not a bad phone -- when it works. But I need it to be functional all the time in case of emergencies. I've read online that this is a fairly common problem with the Bionic and I am really not in the mood to return it simply to end up with another dud. Anyone know if it's possible to return this phone for a different one? I don't know what I would switch to, really anything moderately new that would be more reliable. I can't afford to go out and buy a new Nexus or something right now though, especially at full price.

It sucks because I invested a decent amount of cash into an extended battery, car dock, and charging dock, hoping that the promises of each new update would be true, but with each fix there's a new problem. Occasional restarts are something I can deal with, but this is happening 5+ times a day, sometimes dozens, and each time there is a 2-4 minute wait for it to reboot. I'd like to go to a Verizon store asap to sort it out, but I'd like to see if anyone else has been in a similar situation that was successfully resolved.

I went to the Verizon store today and they are sending me a replacement Bionic, but I'm afraid of running into the same problems again in the future. Google turns up a decent amount of hits searching for "Bionic pressure sensitive restart" and "Bionic restarting." It seems to be a significant problem. Does the Nexus have any quality issues like that? I ask because my little brother is eligible for an upgrade, and I might trade him a Nexus for my Bionic w/ car dock, charging dock, extended battery, and case.

Speaking of, the official @Android tweeted that 4.0.4 is hitting "UMTS/GSM Nexus S, Xoom Wi-Fi, and HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus devices."

quite a few people have had issues with their g-nex randomly rebooting. only happened to me once on 4.0.2, and never on 4.0.4

Huh. Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll stick with the replacement for now.

I don't think I've ever owned a cell phone that's been exempt from rebooting problems. You pay so much money for these things you'd expect that they'd work pretty consistently.

What leaked was a beta/alpha. The current GSM/HSPA+ update going out today is 34 days newer and has many more bug fixes, I've read.

It's been so long since I did it that I forgot: does unlocking the bootloader (without rooting) erase phone data? I remember losing my data, but I don't know if that was during the root process.

I'm trying to remotely guide my non-savvy friend into putting the 4.0.4 VZW leak onto his Nexus but I don't want to have his data go missing. Are there any for dummies walkthroughs written up?

Yes, the factory unlock process involves wiping your phone.
