Anyways, most of the hate is reactionary now. When a thread like this goes on and on and on about Nintendo hate (ooOoOoo) and has been for the past few weeks...one thinks that its being shat on just because. Whats that? 1upyours and Wii? Time for some angry posts!

I normally stay out of this type of crap, but I have to ask - did the pointer on your moral compass jitter this wildly when Luke was making that crack about playing an Iraqi terrorist in GTA IV during this week's podcast? Or was that acceptable humor? Because it seems to me that it might possibly be construed that he was making this joke somewhat at the expense of the thousands of innocents who've died during this whole ongoing Middle Eastern mess.

Let me guess - that's different, right?

Just to clarify - I love most tasteless humor, so I'm not making a judgement call on Luke's joke. I laughed. I just think it's pretty damned disingenuous to puff all up and act offended at tasteless comments directed towards people you know, when you're sitting around every Thursday evening cackling at similar commentary directed towards others. If posting this gets me on the 1up shit list, OH WELL. I'm just calling it as I see it.

I strongly disagreed with the notion that it'd be a good idea for the protagonist in GTAIV to be a terrorist, and when luke said that on air, I actually did visibly react in a negative fashion. I remember it distinctly.

and before the podcast, not 20 minutes prior, I wrote this on my blog:

Terrorism

Set in modern times, it's going to be near-impossible for Rockstar not to reference an on-going war. With the protagnoist's nationality not-very-clearly defined (Russian? Middle-eastern?), they could very easily get away with generic 24-style references to "that country" and "the middle east" and "our enemy." Some in the office are convinced that you play as an outright terrorist, but I say that doesn't make any sense: for one, the media would crucify Rockstar like we've never seen before. Secondly, he seems to be wanting to get away from his past. And third, his past (murder, human trafficking, etc.) seems more in line with organized crime than the goals of modern terrorism.

But, that doesn't mean that there won't be references, or even ties to the character.

You sound like you have some anger problems. This is what I don't get, you and Luke continue to defend yourselves/1up/the company/etc and continue to badmouth the GAF community...yet you also continue to come and post here. I don't get it. If you don't like it, why do you come?

it's been a really bad day, and that's a question we ask ourselves more and more. I'd be happy to take a ban at this point, despite all the actual good people on this board.

It's okay. Everybody has their ups and downs. It just seems to me that sometimes a lot of the staffers from various outlets, the 1up consortium in particular, like to badmouth the forum but continue to use it a source of information to fuel their own articles or podcasts or what have you.

And the whiteboard was a joking suggestion I gave to you (guys) in the thread where Jeremy got to review UG&G three times that you met with a rather snoody attitude. :p

ah yes. no whiteboard, but we've combined our assignment templates, so that's something.

and I dunno about "fuel" -- 1up news will definitely source stuff that springs from here, but all the podcast news and messageboard stuff is pretty much homegrown.

And as far as Ziff is concerned, I hear it's not the Gaming Group douches who're salivating for the legendary edition, but the douches from CIO Insight.

Probably already posted, but that GTA IV discussion is odd. John keeps mentioning that the GTA introduction trailers usually have fast cuts, fast music and violence. But the GTA:VC and GTA:SA ones really didn't. The first GTA:VC had the most tranquil atmosphere ever and just showed you Vice City, skating people etc.

Click here to watch the first GTA:VC trailer. Really, that trailer showed almost nothing more than this trailer did. Just introduced you to the world and the main character, it showed almost nothing more because it DID introduce motorbikes, but that's it.

Honestly dude...you guys put actual effort into your work, and it really puts you head and shoulders above the rest of the U.S. game specialty press. And 1up Yours is the only gaming podcast I enjoy. Why you bother with this place is beyond me--it's a gaming Gomorrah.

Seriously though, most people don't remember the exact details of five year old games. I remembered previous trailers being more exciting too before YouTube proved otherwise. Not exactly a blow against John for not remembering a half decade old trailer.

Plus, the guy actually played Jetpac on its original system. I would love a compilations of Pre-NES Rare games. Use your mighty influence for good John!

I'm not blaming anyone, just thought it was something to mention. This kind of trailer was exactly what I was expecting because of what they've shown before, it's not an odd change of pace. They've used the first trailer in both GTA:SA and GTA:VC to introduce the world and the character. They try to get across the vibe of the game.
