NINTENDO DOWNLOAD: SPEND LABOR DAY WITH PECULIAR COWBOYS, DEADLY SAMURAI AND FEATHERED FRIENDS

Sept. 6, 2010

You've earned a day off. No matter what kind of labor keeps you busy on most Mondays, today is the perfect day to just relax and enjoy yourself. To help put you in the leisurely spirit, this week's new downloadable games for Wii™ and Nintendo DSi™ systems offer welcome diversions for everyone under the sun. Mosey into an atypical Old-West adventure with Fenimore Fillmore "The Westerner" for the WiiWare™ service. Live out your secret samurai fantasies with the NEOGEO classic SAMURAI SHOWDOWN III, now available on the Virtual Console™ service. For some fun on the go, the Nintendo DSiWare™ service now lets you test your tile-matching skills with Simply Mahjong, interact with rare birds in My Exotic Farm, or get your six-string kicks with Music on: Acoustic Guitar.

WiiWare

Fenimore Fillmore "The Westerner"
Publisher: Revistronic
Players: 1
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone) - Cartoon Violence, Mild Language, Use of Alcohol and Tobacco
Price: 1,000 Wii Points™
Description: Welcome to the West! Come and see the fastest cowboy in action. Visit a typical Western town with a grand saloon, a sheriff's office and a bank. Meet the classic doctor, the powerful "master of the land," an industrious pioneer and men and women who raised a great nation with their blood, sweat and tears. But there are things that cannot be helped, and one of them - very typical in the West - is the continuous fighting between farmers and cattle ranchers. While farmers used to win the sympathy of most people, cattle ranchers had more money, more men and more power. Only a cowboy as peculiar as Fenimore Fillmore could side with the farmers when the rest of the cowboys are paid by the merciless and sinister cattle rancher.

Virtual Console

SAMURAI SHODOWN III
Original platform: NEOGEO
Publisher: D4 Enterprise
Players: 1-2
ESRB Rating: T (Teen) - Blood, Use of Tobacco, Violence
Price: 900 Wii Points
Description: This is a fighting game released in 1995 as a sequel to the previous year's release of SAMURAI SHOWDOWN II. Though this is the third installment in the series, the story takes place between the first and second installments. Players can choose from 12 samurai seeking to defeat Zankuro Minazuki. Along with minor upgrades from the last version - such as the ability to press buttons to fill your rage gauge and the ability to defend in midair - you can also select from slash and bust personality types for each character. Each type has its own set of special moves you can take advantage of, effectively doubling the amount of characters you can play.

Nintendo DSiWare

Simply Mahjong
Publisher: Engine Software
Players: 1
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)
Price: 200 Nintendo DSi Points™
Description: Simply Mahjong gives you exactly what you want: pure mahjong on your Nintendo DSi system. Mahjong is a Chinese tile-matching game. The tiles are arranged in a special pattern with their faces upward. A tile is said to be open if it can be moved either left or right without disturbing other tiles. The goal is to match pairs of identical tiles. The game is finished when all pairs of tiles have been removed from the board or there are no exposed pairs remaining. The simple game design and easy, intuitive controls make it a game that the whole family can enjoy. The game features 50 puzzles in each level to provide hours of fun.

My Exotic Farm
Publisher: BiP Media
Players: 1-2
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)
Price: 200 Nintendo DSi Points
Description: My Exotic Farm is an exotic farm simulation game. In the beginning, all you own is an empty field, a few pennies and a single parrot. If you feed and take care of it, the parrot will make feathers that can be sold. With this money, you can buy new animals at the Farmers' Market and purchase equipment from the shopkeeper. Little by little, as your farm builds up, you will unlock bonuses including a well, a great green macaw, a guard dog and a 4x4. You can also exchange animals with your friends who play My Farm or My Exotic Farm.

Music on: Acoustic Guitar
Publisher: Abylight
Players: 1
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)
Price: 200 Nintendo DSi Points
Description: It's like having an acoustic guitar in your pocket! Play your favorite songs easily with the predefined chord option and enjoy the high sound quality. Hear the fingers on the frets and the nails while strumming. A directory of more than 900 chords shows you how to place your fingers on a real guitar and lets you listen to them when selected. Five different styles will accompany you to set the mood: Pop Rock, Soft Rock, Country, Ballad and Blues. Other features include a palm mute function, a metronome and the ability to save up to 10 sessions.

Nintendo adds new titles to the Nintendo DSi Shop and the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time on Mondays. Users with broadband Internet access can redeem Wii Points or Nintendo DSi Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel. Nintendo DSi Points can be purchased in the Nintendo DSi Shop. A Nintendo Points Card™ can be purchased at retail locations. All points from one Nintendo Points Card must be redeemed in either the Nintendo DSi Shop or the Wii Shop Channel. They are not transferable and cannot be divided between the two systems.

Remember that both Wii and Nintendo DSi feature parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visit http://wii.com or http://www.nintendodsi.com.

VC is back, bitches!

The US is still behind EU though, since Fatal Fury 3 and aero the acrobat 2 isn't out here yet.

Shame that VC's savior this week is an absolute turd.

its always been that way. Nintendo seriously need a proper online store/structure with their next-gen system.

I'm surprised that Samurai Shodown 3 came out before Aero 2, but I'm still glad to see something get released.

It was around this time last year when the rate of VC releases began to pick up somewhat. Hopefully the same thing will happen this year!

Well, is $20 for PC. So might go for the $10 Wiiware version. Anyway, what's wrong with Wiiware descriptions? You had not idea of what the game is about with that one.. A puzzle? Plataformer? My first impression was that it was an on-rails fps...

Ugh, SS3 was pretty bad. Do not want. At least it's a VC game though, gotta support that.

Actually, I think SS3 isn't that bad of a game if you actually give it a chance. Yeah, at first, it's tough to like it, but stick with it and it can be appreciated. At this point, I'd probably rather play it than SS4, to be honest.

That Westerner adventure game looks kind of neat. I might give it a shot soon.

I downloaded it to try it out - there are fairly positive reviews of the computer version from a few adventure sites...

My impressions so far:

* I download the 300 block game to SD, then launch it - only to get an error message about not having enough space on my Wii to create a save file. For some inane reason, the game requires a 100 block save file. I deleted the Mario Kart Channel and was on my way...

* The game starts and looks fairly impressive for a WiiWare game, as far as 3D adventure polish goes. A bit flat at times, but I feel like I'm looking at a Toy Story-esque designed Western... plastic, toy/cartoon looking characters, but far better than I was expecting.

* The music is annoying. It sounds as though someone used a very cheap soundfont and didn't try adjusting it to sound good on the Wii. Random notes seem to have off pitches, or go on longer than they should... feels very much as though someone just dumped the MIDI soundtrack from the PC version and didn't try to tweak it to sound better.

Now, so far the game is annoying, but it looks like it has potential. Animations are decent, style is western-cartoonish, and I'm interested to see what happens. However, one giant stylistic flaw appears...

The game was clearly designed to be a "talkie" adventure, but there are no vocals. There are subtitles everywhere, but as every scene/encounter features a fairly decently animated conversation sequence, you feel as though you are slowly progressing through an overly long silent film. If the pacing were faster with the subtitles, it would be fine; however, the pacing of the scenes is clearly designed to match up with spoken dialogue, of which there is none.

Heck, if the game had Banjo-Kazooie squeaks, I'd be happier. If the game had vocals of ANY sort (grunts, etc.), I'd be happy; my assumption is that the PC version had a full voice soundtrack, but they removed it to fit on WiiWare... but didn't make any accommodations for the gameplay.

At the moment, I'm still tempted to believe it's a decent game, but somehow it just seems tedious to wait for pantomime speaking to finish playing through every time I try to talk to anyone. That, and there is so much actual action going on in each scene, it's not conducive to reading subtitles.

I honestly can't believe I'm complaining about an adventure game having only text and no vocals, but this game really, REALLY needs vocals as it is programmed - otherwise you have a lot of talking heads with no dialogue, and that just gets dull.

Seriously? I had figured it was impossible due to the file size of all the 2D art plus the music (346 MB on PC). I wonder just how badly it'll suffer from whatever compression they're using.

For what its worth, Jett Rocket was larger than that before compression. I imagine they will lower the resolution on a few of the lesser seen images and cut music down a little.

Europe update. NoE have not written the blurb yet, expect it sometime tomorrow though it'll be a copy paste of each of the pages.

WiiWare
Balance Training Physiofun (Kaasa solution) - 2000 Points
My Aquarium 2 (Hudson) - 500 Points
Racers' Islands - Crazy Racers (ZALLAG) - 1200 Points

DSiWare
Trailblaze: Puzzle Incinerator (Nintendo) - 500 Points
Where's Wally? Travel Pack 3 (Ludia) - 500 Points
Music on: Acoustic Guitar (Abylight) - 200 Points
myNotebook: Tan (Nnooo) - 500 Points

A 2000 point WiiWare game :lol ? I sure hope that is a typo on NoEs behalf.

The racing game says 1-4 players but the blurb talks about it supporting 8. Possibly due to its contorls being remote aims and shoots and nunchuck drives.

But Machinarium is already compressed on PC :p

Had no idea Machinarium was going to Wiiware either.

It's a great game (one of my favourites of last year) and I hope this move will get more people to try it.

I'm not a big fan of pc gaming at all, but this was brilliant. Really charming, beautiful, and definitely has a vibe to call its own. Would recommend it in a heart beat.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but does anyone know if nintendo is planning to release mischief makers for the virtual console? My copy broke and I still havent beaten the game yet. I think this is a first party nintendo game so it should all be fairly simple.

Nintendo? Planning to release a game on Virtual Console? Ha.

But seriously, I'm not sure who would even have the rights to that. Treasure (developer), Nintendo (NA/EU publisher), SquareEnix (JP publisher was Enix).

.... it's not like there hasn't been worse.

Ogre Battle 64, a square enix IP now, published by Nintendo in Japan and Atlus in the US.

Shouldnt they figure stuff like this out when they decide to make the game?

For those that don't know (I didn't), And Yet It Moves has improved controls on WiiWare. You hold a button and then tilt the Wii Remote to rotate the level, and you can now rotate it to any angle instead of 90 degree increments. It's a little more fun and visceral to play it that way. It also has a subtle gravity indicator, so while you're in rotation mode, you can tell which direction your character is going to fall when you let go of the button. It has some other improvements and additions too, so I'd recommend it. It's a great game.

And it looks like Wii has finally amassed a nice little collection of point and click adventure games. Stuff like Broken Sword, Sam and Max (although they're not the greatest ports), Zack and Wiki, Tales of Monkey Island, Strongbad, and Machinarium. And then there's ScummVM on the Homebrew Channel. And I think the upcoming Back To The Future games from Telltale are supposed to come to Wii.

Sorry for the self-promo, but I want to know if anybody wants to win a free copy of And Yet It Moves.

I have five to give away on my website.

US and European Wii owners only, unfortunately.

Edited note:

Contest is going until September 18. So get your entry in soon!
Sweet, I didn't know you worked on that! Loved the Mac Steam version. Unfortunately I haven't been able to download the WiiWare version because my Wii isn't compatible with my university's wireless system... entered anyway just in case the code lasts long enough for me to enter it once I get back home next vacation.

Oh, no, I didn't work on the game. It's just my website. The developers were kind enough to give me five copies to distribute through a contest.

I do, however, think it's a phenominal deal. It's a great game and is possibly free.

Just wanted to say; Music on: Acoustic Guitar is an excellent guitar simulator! Much better than Jam Sessions. It has more accords (oder 900) and you can pick each string individually. The accompaniment is nice as well. For 200 points a steal. I bought the Retro Keyboard app as well after playing with it. That one's also very well done! I hope for more of those!

Thank you for biting the bullet on these. I'll give them a try as well - I just hasn't really heard much about them.

I have a question somewhat related and I don't want to bump the other threads. Does anyone know if Contra & Castlevania Rebirth support widescreen? So far, every video I've seen has been 4:3 aspect ratio.

We don't know why he keeps buying PAL, either.
You guys haven't noticed? It's been (with exceptions) shit for months everywhere.
