NHL 2011-2012 Offseason thread of Cash Rules Everything Around Me

I'm thankful as hell the Olympics are over. At least now I can watch Sportsnet/TSN and enjoy highlights and not just hours and hours of olympic coverage and human interest stories.

Also, the cba stuff earlier about the "non player salary cap" made me chuckle a bit. I would love to see the irony of a coach working his contract to circumvent that cap. lol

Blackhawks would have to keep Quenneville's moustache comb supply kept off the record.

This would be true if baseball was remotely interesting to watch.

I don't mind baseball really, at least the playoffs will be starting soonish, and at least highlights are fun to watch because it's the actual exciting parts. Baseball isn't fun to watch when it turns into a 4.5 hour slog of a game. edit: and apparently there was a perfect game pitched today. I mean that shit is cool... and a player suspended 50 games for a ped. well dang.

That's Hockey is talking about that player rankings vote thing where Eberle was better than Crosby. Even Gino Reda was surprised by it.

HAHA OH WOW.

A lockout would fuck up my flow. I'm an MLS/NHL guy. Those leagues only overlap during one of the league's playoffs. Basketball seems alright until you realize you're a Knicks fan.

Normally I'd agree with you. However, the NHL has consistently made decisions which have DECREASED the pool of money from which the players draw, particularly in Phoenix. The NHL has the convenient market position of being a monopoly that goes unregulated, so they know they're gonna continue to be profitable.

It's hard to argue the NHL is a monopoly when players go and play in Europe all the time. If the players don't like the NHL offer, they can certainly play elsewhere.

The average NHL salary has gone up since the last lockout, players have no reason to cry poor either despite getting a raw deal the last CBA. Can't imagine what salaries would be like without the cap.

If vicarious sports trophy experiences were ice creams, yours would be butternut squash.

Well, if he wants to build a house in Vancouver, that might cover the down payment.

That'd be a pretty steep discount considering he could probably command anywhere from $5-$6 million as a FA.
Gotta think negotiations will take into account the Sedin effect.

The Sedin Effect. That'd be a boring movie.

So, is there going to be hockey next year or not? Having two lockouts in a decade can't be good. I just want to see the Panthers build on last year and get to the second round of the playoffs.

I would expect a lockout. All signs seem to be pointing towards it and if you expect it you can be presently surprised if there is a season.

Sabres tickets mini-pack renewal came in the mail today. Among the games, Sabres v Red Wings is only $42 for cheap seats but it's on October 16. Sucks looking at these games and wondering how many are going to be cancelled.:(

Wow, one of my coworkers just said the Salary Cap was a bad idea. I am baffled. He continued to get bashed for it by 3 other coworkers and me. I think I have to ask for him to get fired. Unacceptable.

My wallet is hoping for a lock out. Since I've been giving money to the Ducks these past couple of months for my season tickets, I'll be able to get that money back or put it towards next season.

What would you guys do if there was a lock out? Get your money back or use it for next season and get awesome seats or your regular seats.
