Well we're not done yet.

But just for a moment, let's look back.

Very nice, Cyan. Love how all the contributions are represented.

Time to live up to the theme this time around.

My first story.

I was pretty proud of my concept and the second place choice gave me a bit of an esteem boost. I had not written a short story in five or six years and so I was glad to see I could still tell one. I was able to set up the next challenge because Timedog, the winner, bowed out because he was busy I believe. So within a week I got a pretty good idea of what you guys had been doing all along.

I really wish I had been here since the beginning, but even more so, I wish I was able to sit down and crack more stories out for you and I plan on trying harder for the next 100.

You guys have a great little subcommunity here of like-minded writers and do a great job of treating people like they belong, so thanks everybody.

:) I love Tangent's theme and secondary. I was planning to do an anniversary special and post all the stories whatever the theme was, but it just works so well!

Agreed! Thanks to all of you folks, regulars and sporadic visitors alike, for making this such a good time.

Oh yeah! I actually thought it would be fun to write a prequel to my first story for the occasion, but I couldn't come up with an idea that wasn't a complete retread. Something about derelict space stations/ships and hidden killers not being as interesting the second time around I guess
Yes, that's a Prometheus joke
.

But yes, I can't miss out on a celebration, so I'll throw something up. Though I thought maybe for the 100th we'd have a 5000 word limit. ;p

I think two or three times now I've entered these threads and expressed either regret that I wouldn't be able to make the deadline or hope that I might be able to write a story but didn't commit. I never actually wrote anything.

You know what? Screw that. I'm doing this one. I don't know if any mods are lurking this thread, but let this be my equivalent of a ban bet; if I don't enter this thing, I deserve a ban at least twice as long as the entry period for this.

Granted, I might wind up writing a piece of crap, but it'll be my piece of crap.

Wow, what a set of posts, Cyan! Really, really looking forward to this challenge. No procrastinating, I'm starting NOW! ...right after I browse GAF a little longer...

Very fitting theme for #100. That's a helluva lot of stories for 4 years, here's to another 100 more challenges!

While we're on the subject, how did #1 get started? Is there some ancient writing-gaf thread somewhere and someone just suggested this idea? This isn't something I've seen around the internet as a thing, even with forums with devoted writing subforums.

Don't really know, to be honest. I think that's a question for AB. Far as I can tell it leapt fully formed from his brain like Athena.

Only thing that sucks about the list? More recent stories are already deleted (including all of mine) because we were using Tinypub.

Maybe we should make some Google doc of all our stories or something.

Anyway.... Is the secondary more of an additional theme this time around or is there a specific objective? I'm going to be able to launch a lot of airplanes off of this thing.

Yeah, it's sort of an inevitable consequence of the way we're doing things these days.

I'd rather not do a Google doc sort of thing, since I'd prefer to leave it where people can remove their stories easily if they like. That's why I have all the links going to posts rather than direct to stories.

Looks like Cyan just archived them by the original post we had C+P'd or linked the story to. I guess it's as simple as updating the link to something more permanent if tidypub or something similar was being used. I know I write them in MS Word before transcribing it somewhere else, so I have my own copy and I usually (but have been lazy about) archiving it on my blog that no one reads (and I barely use, sadly).

Wow, stunning thread Cyan! You guys have done so much work over the years, it's both inspiring and a little intimidating. I shall be giving this topic some serious thought over the next few days, see if I can find a new genre to work in for this one. Exciting!

Awesome theme, very apt - and congratulations on reaching 100 writingGAF!

It's awesome seeing everyone's stories up there, so many I remember fondly - it makes me wish I hadn't procrastinated so long in joining the writing challenges, but I was still surprised to see I'd entered 20 so far, and had even totally forgot about a story or two I had written.

Cheap plug for the poetry thread; http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=476562 - 3 days left to enter!

Inspired by the very first story in the very first thread, I think I will write a story in the erotica genre .... maaaaybe :p

Although saying that, I wonder how you can write a tight story in 2000 words that also includes a cumshot... an interesting challenge.

I remember challenge 50. Writing Gaf had my back, but got a few pms about it long after it was over.

I remember one pm, that said, it had taken a while to settle into their mind, and wondered if it was actually based on a true story.

I said I didn't remember but it was stuff most likely I read in the papers and put together.

And they said, it sounded more real than that. Was it really about somebody closer to me.

I told them to go away.

I started so long ago, what a year, that 2009.

It's sad that I peaked and am now just stumbling haphazardly downhill production-wise, but I had to leave writing challenges for new challenges.

But I will submit for #100!

Oh I meant individuals doing it, not a collected thing among members. I already have a Google Doc of all of my stories from GAF, so I was just thinking of sharing it.

Memory lane time! I've written a whole lot of stuff for these challenges (
I've submitted something for every single one thus far--yeah, that's 99 pieces o' writing, soon to be 100
). Here are a few of the more memorable challenges.

#1 - Saw the thread: "Wow, other people on GAF are interested in writing? Nifty!" I was really excited--I hadn't really written any fiction in a long time, though I'd been theoretically interested for a while. I wanted to write something right away! But where to start? I hadn't the slightest idea of how a short story worked. How was it put together? What made it move forward, where did it start, where did it end? I didn't want to have to puzzle it out, I just wanted to write something! So I did a poem.

This would be a recurring thing for me--it took a surprisingly long time before I figured out how to put together an actual story rather than just a loose sequence of events. Not that there's anything wrong with a loose sequence of events, if it's well put together. We've had some great ones on here! But it's not a story without conflict.

#14 - Got a PM from somebody during this challenge. He had edited a short story mag while at university, and said he considered the story I'd written publishable. Whoa! What? I could maybe actually publish some of this stuff? Like, people would pay me actual money for it?

In retrospect, I'm not sure the story was all that wonderful, but it sure was a boost of confidence. It got me thinking that maybe I really could do this. Maybe I could be a proper writer, and not just a hobbyist who sometimes posted stuff online. Still working on that. ;)

#40 - I went all out for this challenge. Decided I was going to write something Borgesian. (Often, you can tell what I've been reading recently by the stuff I do in a challenge. I read The Hunger Games, and wrote a 1st person present POV. I read McCarthy, and wrote dialogue with no quotation marks. I read the Liaden books, and wrote cozy SF.) I had Borges on the brain, so I went for it, and to some extent pulled it off. It was a story within a story within a story, and, I thought, the best thing I'd ever written. I'm not sure it still isn't, though I haven't gone back and looked at it recently. The voting public apparently didn't agree, but what can you do? :p

#52 - Really fun secondary on this one. The idea was to imitate another GAF writer's style. I chose ZephyrFate for myself, since his style is so completely different from mine--he really lays the imagery and metaphor on thick. I mean, he doesn't use a knife, he uses a pastry bag. For me, use of imagery had been one of my biggest challenges. Had a great time writing it, and realized that hey, maybe I could actually use imagery successfully in a story. It's still a weak point for me, but it was fun to see that I could do it if I really pushed myself.

#74 - My stories vary a lot, but are often on the lighter side. This one wasn't. Child abuse, shared fear and pain, loss of a close friend. Rough going. Not everything I've written has been airy fairy lighthearted, but this one really sticks out for me in how far it went the other way. Also notable as one of the many times I have tied with Tangent for first place! Why is it I only ever tie with Tangent?

#77 - Awesome secondary here. Anonymous submissions! I had a great time with this one. Did a segmented story where for each segment, I imitated the style of a different GAF writer. Crow, Timedog, ronito, Tim, Zeph--can't remember who was which, but it was a lot of fun. We've done this secondary again since, and it was still fun. Maybe it should be a regular occurrence. Not all the time, but a sometimes thing, like cookies. Once or twice a year?

#82 - My story wasn't particularly wonderful for this one--which was disappointing, as I thought I had a great premise--but the secondary was tons of fun. Weirdtopia! I had a blast coming up with different weirdtopia examples. Good secondary objectives are difficult to come up with, but when they hit, they can really make a challenge that much more fun.

It's kind of satisfying to go back and look at older stories and see how far I've come. The improvement from 1-50 was huge, the improvement from 51-99... not so much, but it's still there. Don't get me wrong, I've definitely submitted some filler ("Urgh, time to bang something out for the damn challenge. Bah!"). But all that writing has definitely had an effect. :)

I just read your entry for #51 (guy gets cloned by instant matter transporter, the clone gets to take over his life). Nice concept! There was some stuff that didn't quite make sense to me about the world, and the dramatic beats seemed rushed (naturally for such a short piece), but I really liked the ideas at work there. Might be worthy of being expanded.

Holy crap, the 100th Creative Writing challenge! That's pretty amazing guys. Props to everyone who's submitted stories and helped keep this challenge moving. I'd also like to than Cyan personally for initially introducing me to this thread long ago. I haven't been as active as I'd like on here, but I'm hoping to change that.

Also, not to completely derail the thread here but I noticed in the Creative Writing FAQ that it's suggested that people with potential interest in publishing their stories someday should submit them via a dropbox link instead. Is this to say that stories previously submitted directly to the forum are now property of NeoGAF? Just looking for some clarification here.

This actually also got me a little interested about the publishing process as a whole. What are the available outlets for people like ourselves to get our stories published?

Legion, right? I can spot Timedog from a mile way - "crowbar to the brainpan, motherfucker", "orgasmic release" - and Zephyr, I think, but my own is less... distinguishable, of course.

Couldn't say I've noticed much improvement in myself. Perhaps even some regression - I go back and admire my earlier minimalism at times. My imagery and transitions need work; I can pull off a clean, smooth manuscript, but it can feel empty when I read it back later; and first-person is a nice, easy crutch for me. But it seems as if you go about your writing with goals of improvement. Your filler is like my normal. I need to put in a lot more rigour and time into my pieces. Next hundred, I should step my game up. Basically, I feel like the writer's equivalent of:

FAT+APOLLO.png

Seeing the amount of effort other people put into their writing around here is sobering, to say the least; and good fuel for change, I hope.

I look back and I see my older entries and man it's almost embarassing. Interestingly enough there's only two that I'm not embarassed by and yes one of them is the donkey one. I don't think I could've done that much better outside the beginning.

Your craft has improved a lot. Seriously, go back and read your first entry, "Jane," and then your latest from the last challenge. Similar themes, but the execution is orders of magnitude better in the recent piece.

As for feeling empty... sometimes it's just like that. Sometimes your writing just isn't going to feel right. I definitely have that myself.

I've had this with speaking too--I used to participate in Toastmasters, and sometimes the speech is there, sometimes it isn't. Sometimes you're feeling it, riding high on the audience, caught up in the spell just as much as they are. And sometimes you aren't.

Thing is, having the craft down makes it easier to write something even when the center just isn't there. It doesn't cause it, just makes it possible. When you didn't have as much skill at the craft, without the center, it probably wouldn't hold together at all. You could easily tell when it wasn't working. So it's not regression. If anything, it's sort of like the uncanny valley in animation.

If that makes sense.

I'll also note that all this is theoretical--I haven't really noticed your pieces feeling empty or emotionless or what have you.

I did some huge missteps but I'm pretty proud of my stories on a whole.

Most of the time I had ideas for years that I had little interest in fleshing out into novels and thought it'd be fun to write them down and share. My worst story was one of these that should have been kept and hybernated for a while: I was going to write a story about a planet that's only for scientific research and prisons becomes abandoned and it ends up being Mad Max meets Lost meets Prison Break. It should have been a novel, but I roughed out a short chapter for one challenge about a character being released from an automated cryogenic prison and it was just bad. I didn't put enough thought into the tech and I never went over it again (one of my last minute submissions). you guys were way too nice to me on that one, though we all agreed it ended on a cop out.

Ironically one of my least favorite stories was one of my two wins. The story of the kid who follows his estranged sister through the years and through her connection to a civil rights author. He falls for the author's daughter, but surprise...it was a good idea for a story, but my original cut was 4000 words and I had to cut half, if not more, of the entire story. I would like to go back and add those bits in and make it feel less rushed in places.

My favorite story only got like two first place votes, then after that no one voted for it - I'm still going to edit that and send it in. The idea of the abortion debate moving on in the future to cover failed clones and the protagonist being a Catholic blowhard. I tried to make it from her perspective and I wonder if I turned people off with either a) the subject matter or b) the protagonist being a right wing stereotype and either not a character someone would want to follow or maybe they thought I was actually anti-abortion and making a point. I don't know. But I still love it and it's 80's Stephen King-like ending. :)

correct about everything
I've been slacking off, but it's time for a glorious comeback. Been a total lazy twat lately, but with the #100 milestone I have decided to turn over a new leaf and imitate Cyan, submitting something for every future challenge, no matter how rushed and awful it might be.

Not to say that Cyan's stories are typically rushed and awful, but you get the point.

Thanks, man. You're probably right. No, you are right. Just feel like I'm underachieving. And, yeah, it could also be the distance. Once a story's been in your trunk for a long time, it stops being an extension of yourself, and just becomes a story - so, it's easier to be less precious.

I need to learn how to write an actual story and not just a random scene. It's always been something that I've struggled with. I also think I may have just run out of ideas in general the last year or so. I've never had much creative juice and I think that it may have been drained. Well, there's that and the very real feeling that I've only ever been getting worse.

I love the theme but I'm having a hard time deciding on which way I want to go with it. Started writing something but about 1,400 words in I realized that I think I went a bit too detailed and not sure if I can cover everything I want to within the 2k limit. Argh! Back to the drawing board I suppose.

I really wish I had more time to go back and read all the old entries. It really would probably end up being quite a hefty novel. I'm incredibly amazed that Cyan has entered all ONE HUNDRED challenges - that is seriously quite a feat! If GAF were a video game, that would be an Achievement that only he had ;)

The word limits seem to be getting smaller! I found it very difficult to get my first entry under, even with it's funny 2782-word limit. I guess that's why it's a challenge.

I think creative juice is more like a bank account. I say just stick with it, even if the payback is really lousy and makes you feel like crap for a while. I think everyone has a dry spell for a while, but then they get going again. Just hang in there. But for the record, I haven't noticed your writing getting bland or anything.

That's funny. Actually thinking about it the other story I was proud about was the Masturbating Mormon Mommy story.

I guess erotica's my thang.

Erotica can be "unfinished." You have yourself a job, Bob! And if it's Mormon, all the better, Norman. (I have no idea why I'm using rhyming names.) (James.)

Even before Cyan pinged me I intended to jump back in for the anniversary. I just didn't want to say anything until I had a concrete idea of what to write. Though it's nice to be reminded. I keep tagging these treads but never seem to manage to come back to them. Unfinished ideas I have aplenty, but ones I can actually finish within the word count now that's tricky.
