I think when projects actually release it would be wise of kickstarter to make a direct correlation between the quality products and the fact they were directly funded in kickstarter. FTL isnt enough. I mean, then maybe people might invest in more projects that actually look interesting from the premise and not just the nostalgia trip or developer.

This just popped up on my radar yesterday: Timber and Stone. It looks like the playable version of Dwarf Fortress (though very early on) that I've been looking for. And yet with only 8 days to go the Kickstarter is languishing :-(

Haunts' issues have been picked up by the BBC:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20003916

There's two messages people could get from it; one is that it might be seen to corroborate the "SEE! YOU CAN'T TRUST KICKSTARTER!" mindset, which would be a shame. That said, the alternative message - the fact that it's important to pledge with reasonable scrutiny and understanding of the risks involved - is one that should certainly be taken to heart (and I'm pleased to see that the quote they had from RPS highlighted that)

What's the success rate on kick started games? Success being defined as actually producing a funded game that meets the requirements.

Goal of $25,000 doesn't make sense. They should've done the math in advance that in 10 weeks they will run out of money.

P.S. New thread? I'm sure a few of the investors are at GAF and they may not be aware of it.

It's rather hard to quantify, since Kickstarter itself has little to do with the project after it's shipped; you'd have to research the list of all games to figure out where they are currently to get an overall benchmark. There's dozens of low-profile projects that can quietly be successful and you'd be unlikely to actually *notice* the fact unless you funded it.

I would say that of the projects I've personally funded, two (FTL, Diamond Trust of London) have been completed to a satisfactory level, and none have not; that said, I still have a great many WIP projects waiting on results. I'd also mention Sequence, which I didn't fund but has clearly been successful, and DFA, which hasn't been completed but has supplied enough material that I feel that I'm getting my money's worth thus far.

Edit: Oh, Giana's releasing *really* soon, too. I think it's reasonably safe to put that in the 'success' bracket, asuming the game isn't just a bunch of stills and a soundtrack of someone laughing at me.

I actually thought it was oldish news, but I don't follow the project closely and wasn't sure; I was mainly highlighting that the Beeb had covered it, bringing the news to a larger audience, and musing on what they'd take from the story.

Alright. Sounds fair, I suppose. I don't see a dedicated thread to the problem the team is facing though.

With that said, Defense Grid 2's latest update:

Hi,

I'm sorry about so many separate Kickstarter updates today, but so many things came together today that we weren't sure would happen.

In particular, the private forums are open and today we invited every backer in the Kickstarter to join the private forums via direct email from our mailing list.

If you didn't get an email, then after this update, we won't have a way to reach you, as we're going to now solely be communicating to you by direct email and private forum (no longer though Kickstarter).

So after verifying your spam filter, make sure to let us know if you didn't get the email from info@hiddenpath about signing up for your access to the private forums and UserVoice.

Thanks and see you on the private forums.

Jeff

I... don't think I like the sound of that. I have backed dozens of projects and I don't want to join a dozen of different forums to hear what devs are saying or releasing. Do they expect me to go to the forum daily and see if the game is releasing or not? I love email notifications and I prefer it that way.

You're right; I hadn't done a search as much as simply having a nagging memory that I thought I'd heard it *somewhere*. I'll prep a thread.

...but before I do, while this isn't directly a game, I suspect it might interest a few people:

Doug Tennapel Sketchbook Archives

A book documenting the sketches of Doug Tennapel, the artist who - among other works - created Earthworm Jim and The Neverhood. Looks like it'll contain sketches showing how the characters have evolved as well as his own independent stuff.

It's finishing really soon, so people might want to get in sharpish if they're interested. If nothing else, the $95k stretch reward sounds well worth it.

It sounds to me like they will also be sending direct emails with updates, just not posting on Kickstarter. I think it is odd not to post it on Kickstarter too as that would take very little additional time for the benefit it provides.

Do we know if there is a thread for this?

It deserves a thread.

Every single Quest for Glory game at $50? Wow.

Too bad I spent... a lot... on Eternity.

Just in case you're not aware, they're $10 on GoG. They were on sale a few weeks ago for cheaper, too.

Not that I want to discourage you from pledging, of course!

It is actually doing really well now! Jeb retweeted something about it and IGN/RPS had some things on it. At 46K now!

Looks promising, I am excited about it.

Didn't Brathwaite and Hall cancel this?

According to the comments, they've tried to and get an error message.

They contacted KS about it, but it's the weekend, I guess.

And this isn't a computer or video RPG, but a tabletop one - I only mention it because I think it's an important project - Spears of Dawn

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1637945166/spears-of-the-dawn-rpg

Basically it's an old school RPG like D&D (pretty close, but not quite) only instead of being set in medieval generic version of Europe (like most RPGs, period), is set in a medieval fantasy version of Africa. But more importantly, the guy behind it is going to release all the art he commissions for the game in the public domain, so as to encourage more Africa-themed RPG products.

Or as the author puts it:

Spears of the Dawn is intended to be an encouragement to other indie game designers. For decades, we've heard the common wisdom- "African games don't sell," people say. "People can't identify with African character art." "Medieval Africa hasn't got the variety and flavor of medieval Europe." "Players aren't comfortable with an African-flavored setting."

I've just laid down a $3,000 bet that the common wisdom is wrong. I've written this game, commissioned the art, and already paid out $1,800 of the budget in art costs. I've brought on the superb artistic talents of people like Nicole Cardiff, Luigi Castellani, Earl Geier, Andrew Krahnke, and Ian MacLean. I've gone to the sources, looked at the histories, checked out the mythology, and I can say with perfect confidence that medieval Africa provides amazing material.

Very nice, would be interesting to see if somebody can wrangle a crack at a cRPG take on it after the campaign is successful given that the guy seems intent on being open and keeping much of it usable to others outright.

Would love to see an RPG/game of any kind with an African mythology at it's base.

This is strange, but I guess it deserves at least to be reported...

From RPG Watch:
" Charles writes in to inform us of a petition for kickstarting the creation of the spiritual successor to Betrayal at Krondor. You can sign up for the petition implying that you would either pledge $200 or think you can convince your friends to pledge $200 in total.

Over the past year, I've received several e-mails about whether I might Kickstart a sequel or a remake to the award-winning hit role-playing game, "Betrayal at Krondor." Over the years, it's still the game I am the most contacted about, and the title which seems to have been the most beloved by fans.

Following the release of Betrayal at Krondor, John and I had designed an unreleaesd sequel to BAK called "Thief of Dreams". Due to some unfortunate politics between the upper management of Dynamix and our parent company Sierra Online, it never was placed into production, a mistake they later regretted bitterly. "Betrayal at Krondor" became one of the highest grossing games ever produced by Dynamix, and won numerous best RPG of the year awards.

Earlier this year I chatted both with John Cutter, the original producer and my co-designer, and of course Raymond E. Feist who owns the universe in which Krondor was set. Unfortunately Midkemia is tied up for the foreseeable future, but there's really nothing that prevents us from creating another Krondor-like game with the same great gameplay, the same great storytelling, and with the same creative team behind the original. Imagine BAK now with better graphics, a fully orchestrated score, a next-generation puzzle system, and lots of cool enhancements to the original combat system. Would that be a game you'd like to see? Are you willing to go in to help us make it happen?

Today we're asking all of you to throw down and show your love for BAK. Help us gather at least 5,000 signatures of fans who will pledge to either give $200 apiece, or raise $200 from among their friends, to go towards the production costs of a "spiritual" sequel to Krondor. There is no money obligation right now. All we want is proof that there are enough die-hard fans out there who really want this game. If you can meet that goal, we will initiate a Kickstarter drive to make it happen. Right now, it's all up to you."

Link to the actual petition (in case you are interested).

I'm not sure why he feels the urge to make a petition asking for a lot of money out of any single signature (and without any actual obligation, too) instead of going directly with the actual Kickstarter.

I guess he wants to make sure it's a realistic goal before he sets it all up. I assume a Kickstarter can't be started out of the blue, he has to have a team ready to be assembled for the game and rewards all planned.

Anyway, HOLY SHIT ANOTHER KRONDOR GAME! It's sad the petition isn't even close to 5,000 signatures as I'd kill to play another RPG like Krondor. It's still one of my favourite RPGs of all time.

This isn't exactly a game, but these guys are working on a way to get PS3 or Wii controller to work on old school systems, I've been following them since they first started. I'll probably end up backing these guys because I really prefer wireless in my gaming setup.

Shadowgate is live. $120k target.

As an aside: my brother-in-law's band has also started running a Kickstarter. Apparently my niece is in the video, too. This feels really *weird*. Kickstarters are something that other people do!

Damn, I should have been looking at this thread more often. I don't really have time to sift through all the kickstarters going on and this thread has a nice consolidation of games to look out for. Sad I missed Sealark, and Oceanic Adventure game, looks like my cup of tea. I wonder if there's another way I can pledge after the fact..

You do realize you can juts buy the games should they make it to completion?

Though we aren't a digital game I am a Neogaf member and figured I would share our good luck.

We had the artists for our not successful Roleplaying game create a playing card deck. Had a lot of Neogafers really positive about the art in the roleplaying game and so I figured I would post here.
Been running barely more than a day and are 60% to our $12,000 goal! Just good solid art, Bicycle deck with some special rewards for pledges like steel playing cards.

Anyway here is the link. Also already had some Neogafers pledge. Thanks guys!
