Official Destiny Alpha Withdrawal Thread

I only got around to playing a hunter in the beta, and it felt pretty comfortable, but i've noticed a lot of pistols in the artwork, and I've never been one for using a pistol in FPS games. While I did enjoy the golden gun super, should i be worried about leveling a hunter up as my main guy?

Any class can use any weapon. As a Hunter in the Alpha I didn't use handcannons at all. I mostly used Scout rifles or Pulse Rifles as my primary (though i did use Auto rifles in the Crucible).

Did anyone use the pistols a lot in Alpha? They seemed pretty weak to me, but maybe at higher levels penetration/elemental stuff comes into play?

I felt handcannons had a slow rate of fire (most of the ones I found) were slow to reload and had a small ammo count, as well as only doing a little more damage than Scout rifles, which were semi-automatic, and had a faster rate of fire as well as better reload times and a big magazine. Scout rifles were basically better handcannons, but this was in the alpha. There might be higher tier handcannons that perform much better. Anyways, Bungie might address this and make handcannons more viable to use from the start, either by upping their damage or making them faster (either rate of fire or reload speed). The devs could even put them in the special weapon category and up the damage output by a lot, or make it so they can penetrate shields.

I had a pretty nice one that I used for half the alpha. It was fairly easy to get headshots with it once I unlocked the final sight upgrade for it.

EDIT: I also had a reload speed upgrade for it on my helmet, which helped quite a bit.

IIRC they had Handcannons in the Special Slot earlier in development but I guess that changed.

How fast was the reload speed with upgrade compared to the rifles?

The thing with the handguns is as you get better ones, one of their upgrade options of the faster rate of fire by Fanning becomes available. They're bloody devastating guns to get headshots with.

Oh SNAP, now that you say it I do remember seeing the fanning in a video somewhere.

I just applied to the new DestinyGAF clan. Played with quite a few of you in the alpha and hope to play with the rest of you come July.

Just watched the season premiere of Falling Skies on TNT. It got me thinking about the Destiny mythos.

Many generations ago (shortly after present day), the emergence of a gargantuan construct known only as "the Traveler" ignited a Golden Age of technology and exploration for humanity. Initially the Traveler settled on Mars, where it shared its knowledge and technology with humanity, and a city grew around it. With the assistance of the Traveler and its enigmatic technology, humanity tripled its lifespan, terraformed planets and moons, and expanded its civilization beyond Earth and throughout much of the solar system.

The Golden Age would last for centuries, but human civilization fell victim to a cataclysm of extraordinary magnitude, known as the Collapse.A malicious entity known as The Darkness, an ancient enemy of the Traveler, waged a campaign of destruction against civilization, few managing to survive the devastation. Forced to withdraw to Earth, mankind's homeworld, the embattled sphere made its final stand, where it sacrificed itself to save the remnants of humanity. The Traveler is now silent and dormant, while those who survived united to build The City beneath it, establishing the last bastion of civilization in the solar system. A powerful defensive aura remains projected over the City by the Traveler.

I want novels based on this and I want them NOW.

Never noticed the glowing devil horns on the Titan in this pic. I wonder if every class can use the same kind of helmet. :D

I always thought that was part of the character poking though the helm and not the actual helmet. It could be a racial trait of one of the races. Maybe one of them has light horns that poke out through some helms, like Tauren horns and Elf ears in WoW.

I think my favorite moment of the Alpha was when GAF was in a fireteam with Dan Miller and a couple of other Bungie devs. It was a great gesture by them, coming by to answer questions and shoot the breeze with us. Just hearing the excitement in Dan's voice when he was talking about the game made me so much more hyped. IIRC, he said something about inviting a "top guild" to come test the raid(Glass), and it took them 14 hours to clear it. I just hope they come out in force during Beta and do the same. Dan said they were stoked on the feedback, because they were getting butchered over the early Alpha leak. This is a game that you have to play to "get" Word of mouth will make this the best selling game of all time. /kanye OF ALL TIME

Ordered a PS4 on friday, caught up in the hype. Now that I bought a ps4 I just realized that it has no games.

Applied for the group and def can't wait for the beta.

Do you only get 1 active skill per class like borderlands? I really think that limit could make the game dull after a while.

Applying for DestinyGAF

You're approved.
Welcome to DestinyGAF
Buckle up, we are in for one hell of a ride come BETA!

Everytime I see this thread bumped I get depressed because I'm reminded I'm still a month away from Beta.

Almost wish I didn't play the Alpha...

So there is a tier above the special purple items in the Tower?

Gold tier. Oh snap.

Maybe, maybe not. That still outlines four tiers, which we have, just with different colors and names. That post excludes the blue rares we saw in the alpha.

From the alpha, we've seen Basic/Common(White), Uncommon(Green), Rare(Blue), Legendary(Purple).

That post lists them as: Basic (White), Common (green), Superior (Purple), And Gold (Exotic)

But who knows, there could be a fifth rarity to show off completion of the raid or something =p

Edit: Also I love how they decided to swap up the color and name when they got to the exotic tier in that post.

Unless there's been a major change, Exotic still exists. Bungie noted though, that a player would be limited to one Exotic piece equipped at a time. So, Legendary is the peak quality for nearly all your slots.

When Bungie first announced Destiny, they said they were building more than a game- they wanted to build a world which you could explore through books, movies, games, etc.

I'd expect to start seeing books in the works as soon as the IP proves itself in September.

I'm pretty sure, it's one Exotic weapon and one Exotic piece of armour.

I haven't seen anything that specified that. The only thing that has that listed is one of the wiki's.. which cites a Game Informer print article and links to a web article that says nothing about the quality levels.

Consider yourself lucky! Dan is a wonderful tour guide. :)

I know what guild/clan you're talking about, but the story I heard was that they were not able to beat the entire raid during their visit. Which is pretty cool.

I may be remembering wrong, but I think once when I was snipping with my hunter, my prey snipped me with a body shot (shields down, still alive) and I wasn't knocked out of scope. I patiently realigned and squeezed off a head shot. It was a very rewarding moment.

So am I crazy, or did getting knocked out of scope go away?
