Gold is basically the master disc as you release to manufacturing. Depending on your company's internal procedure, it may involve some more stuff like 1 last virus scan or some other tedious-ness. I imagine with a company like Naughty Dog where you make like 1 game every 2 years for 1 platform it's pretty much RTM instantly and discs start printing.

Because perforce is good with assets and git is decidedly shit at those. (Massive repo sizes due to that.)

Perforce is shit at everything else though :/. I just hope the actual coding is done with git, branching is a god send compared to shitty perforce's version.

Lot of people use perforce. Google I think.

What benny_a certainly makes sense, I hadn't thought of the assets and managing files that add up to 10s of gigabytes, I'm a web dev. But perforce's workflow is terrible and the fact it changes file permissions is asinine to say the least.

Google uses way more than gigabytes. I've heard petabytes weekly. They build all of their software all of the time against basically every change submitted. It's pretty awesome, every software company should do the same rather than some guy building software manually and going "oh shit, of some 50,000 changes one of these broke the software build!"

In a year, this will be the most despised game on GAF.

You're preaching to the choir. I wish my company had better automated tests so continuous integration was an actual thing.

This times a million.

I wonder if anyone working on libgit2 is seriously looking into performance for massive files. Of course, even if they did, a repo slug of hundreds of gigabytes is going to be a bad time for any DVCS.

If I was running a game project I'd probably separately handle source contol for software assets and art assets and keep them in sync with a reference file.

You say that because you have experience with working with 100 GB+ repositories? Or you just thought about that for a moment? :p

Having everything in one repo gives you consistency. You don't want to have to use two tools to go back to a specific revision. Anybody that ever worked on a huge project knows this gets messy and a reference file is not an elegant solution.

And git is good because of cheap branching, better merge tracking, bisect, etc. That it is decentralized is nice, but the way people use it nowadays (github) it's not the part that makes it great.

I'm sure programmers are using a dvcs locally where git is currently the top choice.

This will be released 2 days before Father's Day!

I'm going to insist that my daughter (mom) pick me up this game, a 6-pack of good beer, and give ol' dad an afternoon off.

Looks like we'll see a new round of previews tonight

Possibly multiplayer related?
We are getting SP pics and previews on Friday.

Someone did mention something about a mutiplayer session or something.

"@ManuelStanislao: @NaughtyGods not yet, but I have a multiplayer session next week"

I also assume the US press will get to see this already on thursday at Sony's pre-E3 event.

Wish I could afford a PS3 to buy this game :(
Have they said anything about MP yet, or is it a secret until release?

Something must be up with the MP. The game is out in like 3 weeks and they haven't shown it at all.
