Twitch troll tries to donate $50k then chargeback as a prank. It ends bad.

It's just Twitch.

Yeah, it's shitty of this guy to fake donations only to charge back... But no one's life should be ruined over something like that

This is their livelihood though. A lot of Twitch streamers that are popular rely on it for money. Chargebacks taking those funds out of their pockets, as I understand it anyway, is pretty fucked up.

The kid is an absolute dickhead, and he should pay for any and all damages but a 50k debt at 18 can destroy his life. If he can somehow chargeback at least half of the donations I really do think he should, a 25k debt is a lot more manageable and not as life destroying as a 50k debt.

How about not being an asshole to begin with? Maybe some of the streamers can give that money back if he communicates with them instead and does some act of goodwill instead of just going to paypal/bank to try and get it back and fuck those people?

Why would someone be an 'idiot' if they didn't happen to check their credit card bill online during the month? I have a card or two I rarely use and would never think to check the balance every week or anything. I'm not using the card. I'd certainly notice at the end of the month, but to not only assume, but expect under threat of being an 'idiot', people to check their bill online everyday or something is ridiculous.

Might be dumb to not have text alerts when spending over a certain amount on the card.

He'd just do a chargeback with his credit card and PayPal will be the ones making a loss.

But good to see PayPal not always siding with the donator. Seen cases where the streamer has made big losses because of trolls like this.

Chargebacks aren't a "get out of paying free" card. There are consequences for initiating them.

Chargebacks are to be used when a credit card has been stolen. If the person/business who initially received payment disputes the chargeback, then the person filing the chargeback has to prove the card was stolen. That means the banks/police can get involved.

My sister once stole my parent's card, and spent money with it. Before becoming aware it was my sister, my mum spoke with the bank about unidentified transactions, and they told her to speak with members of her family before giving the go-ahead to proceed further, as once they started an investigation, they'd press charges, even if it turned out to be a family member. My sister ended up confessing, so my mum didn't take it further.

If this card does belong to the guy's parents, then issuing a chargeback would very likely result in legal action against the guy.

People worried about this kid:

His Twitter hints that he has very well off parents (his "first" birthday gift of the day was a $200 workout bench), and he's poking fun at his $1010/month payments for this little stunt. He talks about blowing $4000 like it's nothing.

So, yeah.

I doubt this is debt. At 18 no one has 50k of credit card cap (hell it's rare to have that much at any point in your life), unless he's got his parent's AMEX Black or equivalent. I suspect this came out of a bank account or paypal itself, so it was cash in hand. A *lot* of cash in hand, but cash nonetheless.

If this is a kid I hope the parents take this to court. Yeah sure he did something stupid but his life could be over if they don't get at least some of this money back. The punishment seems too extreme.

How can people feel bad for the parents?

If they didn't notice $50k go missing for over a month they're idiots and deserve it. That or they're loaded and literally didn't notice the $50k go missing, in that case they won't miss the $50k anyways, and will have learned a lesson.

if that dude is donating all that money,i don't think he was trying to prank them
i mean,if you have more then $50000 in your credit card and can spend it like that,he doesn't care.

Hopefully he is rich and can pay. If not in the end the credit card companies will charge us in some fashion to get the money back they lost.

Credit card companies already charge what will give them maximum profit.

Wow... that blackjack tweet was truly something. That kid lost all and any benefit of doubt I had.

I agree, but why should a Twitch streamer's life be ruined over it? Imagine if you were given a few thousand dollars and put that money down on a car only to have it charged back. You now have a car loan that you cannot afford on what you're currently earning and no way to cover the costs, all because some guy thought it was funny.

I mean, the problem here is that people shouldn't have access to credit that they can't afford to pay back. But that's a societal problem that extends way above this case. On an actual study of this individual case, which party deserves to live with the consequences of their actions: the streamer who received the money legitimately, or the "pranker" who committed fraud?

Good, fuck this guy. He went out of his way to essentially put money in strangers' bank accounts only to yank it out after they've possibly spent it. I hope he feels this loss for years and years.

Apparently he won't, seeing his twitter account. Seems like $50,000 isn't a big deal to him.

He should receive a pretty huge fine and have a credit card ban for like 10 years, but he should get the money back.

He's an idiot but this would ruin his life.

We sure it's him? Because if so, wow, I regret ever feeling sympathy for that asshole. Should've been $500k.

He tried to ruin the finances of the streamers, he got what he deserved.

Or what do you think would have happened to all those streamers when they spent the money and he took it back?

nah his life needs to be ruined forever don't you get it. the internet needs vengeance for all trolls.

But I hope you are right. It seems like he would have to be from a well-off family to even do 50k of charges in a month.

Not only that but the streamers also eat the fees on refunded donations.

Reminds of a few days ago, some kid accidentally donated $200 instead of $2.00 to Optic MidNite. She refunded it for him because the kid joined her ps4 party chat and started to cry a lot, felt bad for him.

In my very limited understanding, he's using paypal and fraud laws don't count there?

He can use the money he spends in casinos to pay for it.

Troll brags on Twitter acting like his mistake didn't really hurt him? Please. And unless his parents are billionaires even trust fund kids will miss $50k.

I'm not too clued up on it but I think streamers also have to pay for the processing and chargeback penalty fees so they straight up lose money due to it in the end.

Get fuckin rekt. First time I wanted to buy something online and use my parents credit card I practically had to beg them for it. Even after that I asked for permission every single time. Both parents and kid learned a valuable lesson

Considering he's joking about it on Twitter, where it's obvious he's fucking loaded, I doubt he felt any kind of loss for even a second.

The reason he waited so long to try the chargeback was in the hopes that they spent some/all of it. He was trying to put them 10k into debt. Had Paypal sided with him then their lives could have been ruined for "the lulz".
