Golden Age Anime Thread....List them!

Wow I feel like one of those young Narutards / FMA Fans who didn't know there was anything else beyond those shows.

I've seen a lot of these, heard of others, and have never even heard of the rest. I mean Garzey's Wing? Adeu's Legends? WAT? Looks like a Lodoss Spinoff.

I really have to utilize my Rent Anime account again. I was in the middle of Escaflowne but then just stopped and never got around to finishing it.

As for "Golden Age" anime I'll drop this one because it hasn't been yet.

It was one of my first "real" animes that wasn't a syndicated, fully Americanized children's cartoon.

Encore Action baby!

Speaking of which, just remembered another that wasn't mentioned yet.

A shame it's so short.

You've just answered any anime question I've ever asked.

Also, considering that this is the anime thread atm.....for anyone who wants to watch Bacanno! but doesn't want to buy it or watch it with english subtitles, the entire series is dubbed in english on hulu.

I found the complete series of the first run of dvds in a pawn shop for $3 each, and I thought "why not?"

Really great series, and it was a lot of fun to watch. Was kind of annoying how the episodes varied in length so much, but whatever. Fun little OVA.

Golden Boy is the best. Episode 2 and 3 are easily my favorites. 5 would be my favorite if the parts of the episode that wasn't the race were better.

Wow, that immediately looks better than the new shitty version (Bubblegum Crisis 2020 I think).

Isn't Garzey's Wing a Lodoss related stuff?

I don't think that's right either. That's kind of like saying Gundam isn't famous for having Char Aznable and that he isn't a draw for the show. Is it likely that a work endures for 15 years just on the strength of being 'edgy' or a 'deconstruction'? If people can't connect to the work on some level, through characters or something else, I don't see it retaining it's popularity or appeal. That's not the same as saying the characters are 'good', just that they have a clear appear.

You're ignoring that EVA is primarily touted as popular due to being "different and edgy". Character praise and stuff usually off secondary after that (to which I will then laugh), but really, it's mostly popular for being "not your standard mecha show". That is the draw of the show, so to say.

Just jumping in here to say that Berserk has now joined my list of greatest animes I've ever watched. In fact it might just be the best I've watched so far.(Probably will be after a week of soaking it in) It's too bad they didn't do additional seasons to cover the the other arcs, but I guess that just means I'm gonna have to start reading the manga. Next up it's either evangelion or Garzeys Wing. Originally I was gonna watch evangelion before Berserk, but after watching the first episode for both shows Berserk looked MUCH more interesting. What should I go with GAF?

the opening to episode 1 with the bladerunner'ish intro is absolutely epic, but it looks like bandai pulled all of the from youtube -_-

Wait did you take peoples recommendation of Garzey's wing seriously? This is why someone needs to actually invent a sarcasm detector that works over the internet.

Bah, GAF sucks at sarcasm, guess evangelion it is or that boxing anime I keep hearing about maybe.

No it isn't. Why do you keep making shit up?

Oh and what is FLCL exactly? I keep seeing it among the supposed anime "masterpieces"
It's the greatest anime anything ever made, that's what it is. No hyperbole.

hmmmm I'll take GAF's word for it then, I'll probably watch it after watching the first season of evangelion.

onemic said:

I'm just gonna be honest and say why it's awesome. The story makes literally no sense, the dialogue rarely fits the situation, certain scenes are filled with misinformation and clearly shows the writer did not do the research, and the voice acting for the dub is hilariously atrocious.

The short answer is it's so bad it's good. The slightly less short answer is it's so ridiculously insane and indiscernible that it needs to be experienced (preferably in a group of people).

icarus-daedelus said:
So...I guess I should watch Macross and Nadesico?
Yeah, but in that order. IMO Nadesico is better the more giant robot anime you've already seen.

I watched several shows back in the 80s/90s, but I don't think that the majority of them has aged well. I like today's look more, to be honest.

City Hunter
Ranma
Dragon Ball
Dragon Ball Z
Sailor Moon

But recently, there are also Gurren Lagann (THE KING OF KINGS!!!), One Piece...
...seriously, no OP mention so far?

EDIT: I have yet to see Madoka, but I think I'll love it :P

I really should watch Hajime no Ippo, especially since I took up the art of boxing. Now I just need to find it, gah.

That's the name I was looking for. So is this anime all that?

It's a pretty standard and well-executed sports shounen. I personally think it's overrated, but some people like Hitokage will call it a masterpiece, so go for it.

I have a soft spot for some sports shouen like Eyeshield 21. I'll jump onto the boat when I get the chance.

And yes, people call Hajime no Ippo a true masterpiece. The top 10 masterpiece animes that Gaf made a few years back includes this show.

For some reason it also includes ghost in the shell: SAC, which I've heard from everywhere else but GAF, that it's pretty shitty.

That's hard to believe. It's one of the most popular series around, and it's good!

That's right, people like Angel Beats! and they like Stand Alone Complex! Maybe the same people like both shows. Maybe different peoplelike different shows . There's lots of people on GAF.

icarus-daedelus said:
This must be the elsewhere that also allegedly likes Angel Beats.

I will stick with my reasonably sane gaffu echo chamber, thankyouverymuch.
I hate to break it to you but Angel Beats somehow placed on our top 10 anime of 2010 list. We have some unfortunate elements even here on GAF.

So happy for this thread. I really want to love anime again... and it's to the back catalog I go, not modern stuff.

There's plenty of good modern stuff. Stop limiting yourself.

Don't be silly. There's no possible way people can like stuff I don't like.

Another great anime to watch:

LaHTw.jpg

Watch the original series not the current remake. It starts off a bit slow but it's worth it, it has great build up to the world of HxH and it's characters. Also watch the first OVA series which starts where the TV series left off. After that just start reading the manga. The other OVA series weren't as good.

Vision of Escaflowne

Cowboy Bebop

Are those considered Golden Age?

Apart from that Ghibli and those Yoshiaki Kawajiri movies.

Stuff I was into back when I was big into anime:

Already metioned:
Ranma 1/2
Macross Plus

Some others:

All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku

Oh My Goddess! (The OAV although some of the newer A!MG TV was decent)

Not sure about Escaflowne. It had a good start, but then middle way somehow someone drank weird stuff because it doesn't make sense. DILANDEAU'S MENSTRUATION MADNESS and all that.

Haha, seriously though: I thought the Dilandeau story arc was great. Anyone who put up with Shinji Ikari can put up with that, imho of course.

Just watched the first episode of FLCL and......WTF did I just watch? None of the episode makes any damn sense at all. Like, none. All I can say is that the animation quality is absolutely gorgeous and top notch, but other than that this is the most nonsensical anime I've ever laid eyes on. Was it because I watched the dub? Is this what Garzeys Wing is like?

I wish I could watch it for the first time again. It should be finished to be fully appreciated (Not understood) as the masterpiece that it is.

So it is like a better version of Garzeys Wing then? Because that's the exact response I got about that anime.

Haha, Garzey's Wing is enjoyably bad madness from an unbelievably incompetent director. FLCL is legitimately good stuff. It's ambiguous, symbolic, and out-there, but it accomplishes what it's aiming for very well. The two OVAs should not be linked in any way.
