Fucking awesome time to be a gamer in. It's pretty crazy how big a comeback platforming has done this gen.

By the end of this year my most owned genre on the Wii is gonna be platformers by a lot. :D

I mean wow. Rayman LBP2 Blb Donkey Kong and Kirby. Sweet jesus, this gen has been pretty good to platformers, I guess I should stop complaining about the lack of them. I still wish there were more but its been pretty nice.

Missing DK Jungle Climber, 3rd best DS platformer after NSMB and Yoshi's Island.

Also Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, which I personally don't consider a platformer, but if you got Ghouls n Ghosts, Prinny, Hatsworth which are action-platformers, then it should be in. As all Castlevanias, Contra, Chrono Twins, etc

Also for Utimate Ghosts n Ghoblins the re-realease should be included (Goku Makaimura Kai), way more balanced than the insane original release.

With over 20 games now coming out soon, I had to rearrange the posts pretty late in the game considering I was running out of space in the first post. The first post now links to the upcoming titles, and titles by alphabetical order and by system. It's easier to get to the information this way even if it's going to be kind of a mess for just this page.

I guess this is the right thread to say this: I've recently played a lot of N+ (360) again, in co-op. (Finished all the co-op episodes)
It's really an amazing little game, anyone who is even remotely into platformers should play it.

The iPhone isn't the best platform for platformers, with it having no physical buttons and all, but there are still some good games on the device.

Significantly more puzzle based than most platformers, this really reminds me of those fantastic little head scratchers you found in Wario Land 4. Just one room puzzles you had to figure out. There are some really devious ones in this game.

Start Faith running and she'll just keep sprinting, then you're free to make gestures on the screen for jumps, slides, wall runs and kicks. I'm not enamoured with the game, and it really doesn't need to be an iPad exclusive, but it's fun.

Hook Champ ($2.99 - iTunes) and Super Quickhook ($1.99 - iTunes)

Two games that really prove that a unique control scheme, designed specifically for the iPhone and not an old button-based genre tortuously squeezed onto the touchscreen, really pays off. These two Bionic Commando style swinging games are grand.

Canabalt ($2.99 - iTunes) and Robot Unicorn Attack ($2.99 - iTunes)

Two games that work with the touchscreen, you're always running and you just tap a button to jump (or do a rainbow dash, in RUA's case). Both free online flash games.

Pix'n Love Rush (99c - iTunes)

Surprising just how reliable the touch screen buttons are on this game. Lots of fun, and parodies old handheld consoles.

Some others that I haven't played, but are apparently good include Soosiz and Qwak.

So don't write off the iPhone just yet!

Damn it was such a great E3. I had the Ubi conference streaming in the background when I heard "Rayman!"

Blew my mind. Kirby's going to be something really special if they pull it off. Looks like Good Feel is really stepping up after Wario Land.

The other thing to note about this gen is how many co-op platformers there are. LBP, LBP2, Splosion Man, NSMBW, DKCR, Kirby, Trine 2, Portal 2, etc. Even stuff like NyxQuest and the SMG games have it in some form, and it looks like Rayman might, too. It's probably the most significant addition to the genre across the board.

And with this E3, I think it's pretty safe to say we are in a period of serious revival for the genre. Before, it felt like things were sorta on the edge of a real comeback, but now, we have the return of a lot of even retail 2D platformers from the time when platformers first thrived in the 90s, as well as new ones in LittleBigPlanet. With current games and upcoming games, it looks like there will be at least 75+ good games for the genre this gen before it's over.

Flip's Twisted World, Super Meat Boy, and Kirby's Epic Yarn hitting in the next week. Just finished updating the thread. Added NyxQuest to the PC section, Sonic 4 Ep 1 to its respective sections, and Ivy the Kiwi to the Wii. Also added Kirby DS to the upcoming list and updated all the release dates to correspond with wikipedia.

Good job, Anihawk. You probably could have just made a new thread so you don't have to put all that nice content on page 4 where not enough people will get to see it. You should make a new one and reserve the first few posts.

Over the last couple years, platformers have become my top genre. They never really interested me outside of Mario in previous gens, so I'm just now starting to appreciate them. Looks like Sly Cooper, Donkey Kong, Epic Mickey and Kirby will be mine in 2010 but I have a shitload of DD titles to catch up with between PSN/Steam/Wiiware/XBLA.

Opinions and all that, but if you want a Sonic game this christmas, don't pay attention to Metacritic. Colours is head and shoulders superior to the underwhelming STH4.

STH4's scores are old. I need to update all of the scores someday and per platform. Probably do that in January when there's some downtime.

I count the PoP games as more action-adventure. Yeah, even Sands of Time. Also, I haven't played PoP08, just Sands of Time.

The other PoPs have a lot more action in them, splitting their time between fighting and puzzle style platforming challenges, but PoP'08 is very much a 3D platformer.

wellp, at least we got New SMB Wii and the Megamans.

I've tried a good chunk of the other games listed in this thread (maybe half of them), and I don't think there's anything special to be found.

Not to nitpick, but games with platforming elements != platformers. There is a huge difference between games like Mario/N+ and some of the other games on this list.

Portal is much better described as a puzzle game than a platformer, as a lot (most?) of the puzzles involve moving boxes or some other shit around the room. And if we're gonna call Ratchet a platformer, you could make an argument that Uncharted is also a platformer.

So basically, I demand ideological purity from this platforming list! :lol

Ah whatever, at the very least, Marble Blast Ultra should be added to the list. Its more of a platformer than Portal or Ratchet, and its awesome.

Am I the only one that wasn't really happy with New Super Mario Bros. on the DS? I've played it the least out of all of the 2-D mario games.
